At first, I was pretty excited about the announcement. “They’re going to fix the shitty interface for online banking,” I thought! Then I read the release notes. So they’re going to allow access to other QuickBooks windows while the online banking window is open. I guess that’s not so bad… at least my PaperSave software won’t throw an error every time the listener checks the database for a new transaction. I was really hoping they were going to fix that business whereby QuickBooks matches transactions to vendors without prompting. It would be much easier for me to reconcile my own online banking (without having to remove the matched vendor name for each transaction), given the fact that I use the company debit card for a wide range of purchases. So here it is, straight from my inbox to you:

Issues Addressed Thanks to Your Feedback
|
|
Dear William Kirwin,
In Intuit’s continuing response to your feedback on Online Banking in QuickBooks 2009, we are making this early announcement about a new update to Online Banking in QuickBooks 2009. [Note 1]
In late March, Release 7 for QuickBooks 2009 will allow accessibility to other windows in QuickBooks while Online Banking is open so users can easily move between QuickBooks windows. [Note 2]
With the new release, once again QuickBooks users will be able to have multiple windows open, and have access to other areas of QuickBooks, when working in Online Banking.
|
|
Updates to Online Banking Available Late March
Release 7 is expected to be made available in late March 2009. We are now putting the final touches on this new release, which we expect will provide
- Access to multiple QuickBooks windows while users work in Online Banking.
- Faster performance for the Online Banking feature.
- Several other minor changes relating to customer feedback.
Stay Tuned. As we get closer to deployment we will confirm release dates and provide additional release notes.

Please Help Your Clients Get Ready
|
|
Check to Make Sure Clients Are Ready for the Update. Efficiencies in Online Banking for your clients should translate into fewer data entry errors and less time spent fixing errors. To make sure you and your clients will benefit from this update, you may need to make sure their QuickBooks settings allow Automatic Updates.
You or clients can turn on Automatic Updates by going to the Help menu in QuickBooks and selecting Update QuickBooks. Then, go to the Options tab and select Yes for Automatic Update. The QuickBooks user will then be prompted in QuickBooks when the update becomes available in late March.
Manual Update May Be Ready Sooner. When we confirm release dates, it’s possible we will be able to identify an early download (requiring a manual update) of the Release for you to test and preview. Again, stay tuned.

Due to several illnesses in my family immediately following the holiday season, I have had to take a great deal of personal time this January. For the past few weeks, I have had to reschedule or cancel many appointments, put some projects on hold, and limit the number of hours per week that I am able to work for clients of Network Services. As a result, response times for non-critical issues have suffered. Due to more illness in my family, it is likely that I may be called away from work at any time over the next several weeks. In order to better service clients, I will be subcontracting any work that cannot be completed in a timely fashion. I hope to be back to a full work schedule as soon as possible.

I haven’t actually seen a message like this in some time. This is a good example of a virus/malware attached to an e-mail. In this case, you actually have to extract the executable program from the zipped file, and then run it to compromise your system. That makes this relatively harmless for the most part.
Overall, this is pretty weak, and most obviously spam:
- Notice that the domain is “ups.com” where the United States Postal Service should be “usps.gov”
- Notice that the format of the communication has no contact information and does not look like the professional communication you’d expect from the postal service
- You may also note that you did not ship a postal package on November 25th

So, if you see a message like this in your inbox, be kind to your computer and delete it.

No big surprise here. Another Internet Explorer security issue as reported by CNN. If you’re using Internet Explorer on a Windows PC to surf the net, consider switching to another browser such as Firefox. If you’re not dependent on Windows based software, consider switching to a Mac.

I guess Intuit got my e-mail. If any of you are using the online banking features of QuickBooks 2009, then I’m sure you’ve also found the implementation to be abysmal. Every time I classify an unmatched transaction to a vendor, every transaction with the same description is automatically marked as belonging to the same vendor. This is very annoying, and the result is such a convoluted process that the end result is a product that seems unfinished and barely usable. I am pleased to see that the updates to be released address the exact issues I am having with my QuickBooks installation.

Multiple Windows. Some QuickBooks users have asked for the ability to have multiple windows open at the same time. We are working on an update for this as well.
